  40. This is just a little gizmo to work with the Demon AmiTCP
  41. installation. It possibly won't cope with any other AmiTCP setup but
  42. you can try. To start with it needs a script called "startnet" in
  43. Amitcp:bin/. You can set the tooltypes to reflect the programs you
  44. want to use for linking, ftp, mail, news, etc.
  45.    
  46. It was written using a mixture of CanDo 2.0 and 3.0 and requires the
  47. supplied cando.library (in libs:). Sorry about the *enormous* ASCII
  48. Art logo, but I just got Photogenics and I wanted to try it out. :)

  50. Unfortunately, any errors in location or setup just result in the
  51. program not running at all, with no explanation for what went wrong.
  52. Make sure that you have Rexxc in your path, or copy the "RX" program
  53. from Rexxc into C:.

  56. Requirements
  57. ------------

  59. As far as I know it should run on any Amiga with an AmiTCP
  60. installation (and possibly a Demon account :)). I have tested on an
  61. Amiga 3000 and 3000T running WB3.1 and also an A4000/040 running
  62. WB3.0. I don't think that there is a reason why it shouldn't run on
  63. an earlier operating system, but you do need ARexx. To use the
  64. GetNews button you must have the script "NNTPTransfer" in AmiTCP:bin.
  65. The provided nntptransfer script has a couple of alterations to the
  66. one provided by DIS, namely paths for all the commands and an
  67. automatic retry if News is busy (thanks Tez (Tez@tezboyes.demon.co.uk)).

  70. Installation

  73. This part's really tricky so pay attention.

  75. Copy AmiTCPHelper anywhere you like. :)

  77. (Seriously, do check that the tooltypes agree with your set up and
  78. that the supplied nntptransfer script is in AmiTCP:bin.)

  81. Buttons
  82. -------

  84. The buttons do what they say they do. If you have entered NONE for
  85. some of the tooltypes then AmiTCPHelper disables that button.
  86.  
  87. The Mail button changed in version 1.07 to account for multiple
  88. mailboxes. The problem with the unfriendly mailboxes has been sorted
  89. out in version 1.11 (thanks to Ben Scott) and now the mailbox names
  90. are presented in the requester's button as they should be.

  92. Ping, Finger, Clock & now Telnet
  93. --------------------------------

  95. Just type in the name of whoever you want to ping or finger and hit
  96. return. Clock works the same way and will save the resulting time.
  97. AmiTCPHelper will pop up a window with the relevant details. I have
  98. finally added Telnet to AmiTCPHelper, it's not that it was difficult
  99. to do, it's just that I never use it, so I didn't put it in. But then
  100. again, I hardly ever use Gopher, but I put that in, so there you go

  103. Telnet works the same way that all the other field-based tools in
  104. AmiTCPHelper do, just type in where you want to go. You can include
  105. the port name as well.
  106.  
  107.  
  108. Newsgroups
  109. ----------
  110.  
  111. This window will list any newsgroup configs you have. You can
  112. double-click on an entry to make it the current "NewsGroups" file.
  113. Newsgroup files should be named "newsgroups.what_you_like" and put in
  114. where newsroups normally go, your Amitcp:usr/lib directory. This is
  115. where AmiTCPHelper will look for them. Your original newsgroups file
  116. is copied to AmiTCP: and then copied back to AmiTCP:usr/libs when you
  117. quit AmiTCPHelper. You might want to make a newsgroups.std list
  118. containing your standard config in case AmiTCPHelper accidentally
  119. overwrites your original newsgroups because your machine has crashed
  120. or something. As of version 1.11 AmiTCPHelper no longer copies your
  121. newsgroups file to and fro. It was slowing down the start time of the
  122. program and it didn't serve any really useful function.

  127. Tooltypes and their meanings:
  128. -----------------------------

  130. If you enter NONE for the tooltypes for FTP, Mail, Gopher, WWW, IRC or
  131. HList, then AmiTCPHelper will disable the appropriate button. (HList
  132. doesn't have a button but it won't be looked for when a web browser
  133. is loaded.)

  135. WindowX        Gives the final x position of the AmiTCP helper on
  136.         the screen.
  137.  
  138. WindowY        Gives the final y position of the AmiTCP helper on
  139.         the screen.
  140.  
  141. DONOTWAIT    Standard commodity stuff if you want AmiTCPHelper in
  142.         your WBStartup drawer.
  143.  
  144. FTP        Put the path and name of your favourite FTP tool here.
  145.         Possibilities would include "AmiTCP:bin/mftp" or
  146.         "Comms:AmiTCP/ftp", etc. (No quotes are needed). I
  147.         have tested it with both of these and ncftp.
  148.  
  149. Mail        As for FTP. It has been tested with Elm. It doesn't
  150.         work with Mail since v1.07, but I forgot to change
  151.         the docs to reflect this, so sue me :)
  152.  
  153. WWW        As for FTP. Well, it's been tested with AMosaic, but
  154.         if there is a secret Netscape clone for the Amiga
  155.         that I could test it with, will someone PLEASE let me
  156.         know? :)
  157.  
  158. Gopher        As for FTP. Tested with Graham's AmigaGuide-based
  159.         Gopher.
  160.  
  161. News        This isn't currently working and will be removed
  162.         from v1.11 onwards until someone writes a newreader I
  163.         can call up with it.
  164.  
  165. AmiTCPhome    This is the home directory for AmiTCP. Make sure you
  166.         include    trailing "/" or ":", ie. "Data:AmiTCP/".
  167.  
  168. Editor        This is the editor you will run when editing your
  169.         config in the menus. Put the complete path and name
  170.         of the program. To be able to edit the files it says
  171.         it can they have to be in the AmiTCP:db and
  172.         AmiTCP:usr/lib directories. Tested with TurboText.
  173.  
  174. SMail        This is the sendmail command for AmiTCPHelper to use.
  175.         It must    reside in Amitcp:bin. Just enter the filename.
  176.  
  177. Link        This is your *ARexx* link script. AmiTCPHelper
  178.         automatically looks for this script in your
  179.         AmiTCPHome bin directory. Tested with "Link" and
  180.         phil's (phil@curve.demon.co.uk) "PLink".
  181.  
  182. LinkOpts    The options for linking up. You should at least give
  183.         "up" as an option, but you can also put "up news" or
  184.         any other commands that your link script supports.
  185.  
  186. HList        As for FTP. This is the Hotlist program for Mosaic.
  187.         There is only one as far as I know.
  188.  
  189. Ping        As for FTP. This is your Ping command.
  190.  
  191. Finger        As for FTP. This is the command you should use for
  192.         finger (oo-err).
  193.  
  194. Clock        As for FTP. This is the clock command you are going
  195.         to use. So far I have only tested it with Syncro.
  196.  
  197. IRC        As for FTP. Enter the name of your IRC client.
  198.         Remember to include the path. Tested with Grapevine.
  199.  
  200. Telnet        Your telnet application. It works with Telnet_VGOODER
  201.         from Demon and should work with most if not all of
  202.         the others.
  203.  
  204. Startnet    This tooltype determines whether you want the
  205.         startnet script executed by AmiTCPHelper or in your
  206.         user-startup. Enter yes for yes and no for no (quel
  207.         surprise!).
  208.  
  209. WinSize        WinSize sets the size for the output window that
  210.         AmiTCPHelper produces. It should consist of four
  211.         numbers separated by /. For instance:- 0/0/400/200.
  212.         This will open the window in the top left hand corner
  213.         of the screen which will be 400 pixels wide and 200
  214.         pixels high.

  221. About        This shows you what version of AmiTCPHelper you are
  222.         running and my name and email address. If you
  223.         register this is where your personalisation will
  224.         appear.

  226. About CanDo    This gives some information about CanDo v3.

  228. Quit        Surprisingly enough, this actually quits out of
  229.         AmiTCPHelper.

  235. Aliases        Hmm, God knows what this does...

  237. Config        This lets you edit your AmiTCP:usr/lib/config file.
  238.         I'm not really sure if this is any use at all...

  243. NewsGroups    Surprise, surpise, surprise... This lets you edit your
  244.         newsgroups. Remember kiddies, the number after the
  245.         newsgroup is how many days to keep news for before it
  246.         gets trimmed.

  248. NewsStamp    Lets you edit the newsstamp so you aren't on the
  249.         blower downloading all night... :)

  251. Startnet    Lets you edit the startnet script. Changes made will
  252.         obviously not work until you re-run the startnet
  253.         script.

  268. nntptransfer, and also lets you browse an "active" list. Done! It's a
  269. separate program called GroupEditor, downloadable from an Aminet site
  270. near you (comm/tcp).

  325. v1.12    Yet another rejig of the buttons as the Prefs and Read News
  326.     buttons have been removed. Not sure if I like the new layout
  327.     so it might get changed yet again...
  328.     I've added a DOSNotify event to check to see if a new mailbox
  329.     has been added when mail is received. Previously, the only
  330.     time AmiTCPHelper checked for the names of the mailboxes was
  331.     at startup.
